After warding off the Dvandvas (the pairs of mutual opposites, viz. heat and cold), they began to think of the means of their sustenance (such as agriculture) . When the Kalpa-trees had perished along with the honey, they were overwhelmed by hunger and thirst and became bewildered and dejected.
